How do we conquer NIAN (年, or Nianshou 年兽) this year!

The ancient story goes: There was a monster named Nian (年, or Nianshou 年兽) with a long head and sharp horns. It dwelled deep in the sea all year round and only showed up every New Year’s Eve to eat people and livestock in nearby villages.

Therefore, on the day of New Year’s Eve, people would flee to remote mountains to avoid being harmed by the monster. People had lived in fear of this monster until an older man refused to hide in the hills but successfully scared away the monster by pasting red papers on doors, burning bamboo to make a loud cracking sound (precursor to firecrackers), lighting candles in the houses, and wearing red clothes.

So the question is, who is the Nian in your life, and how can you conquer it? Maybe it’s the current pandemic, business struggle, personal challenges, etc.

We need to hold the monster with its horns and destroy it too, and then it would mean a new year has started.

For me, the Nian is the red ocean in which one of my business units is swimming. To conquer the Nian, I must build a successful blue ocean strategy.

I wish you all to overcome the monster, a very happy new year to you all. Wishing and sending loads of happiness and prosperity your way.
